Hearth - Ending Elder Homelessness

Board of Visitors Member Profile:

Jim Wayman, Founder of Store to Door Mobile Self Storage

Jim Wayman of Store to Door Mobile Self StorageJim Wayman is a local entrepreneurial business owner who started Store to Door after his records management company Safesite, Inc. was acquired by Iron Mountain Records Management Corporation in 1997. Prior to that, he and his business partner Tom Golisano founded Paychex, Inc.

Jim learned of Hearth and its mission and unique model, through his friend Gene Miller, a Hearth board member, Jim had befriended a homeless gentleman and was trying to help him find housing - but with no success. When he told Gene about it, she directed him to Hearth.

Jim was instantly impressed with Hearth's innovative mix of outreach services and permanent housing and felt an affinity for the entrepreneurial spirit of Hearth. "Hearth has identified da problem, found the solution, and is putting it in action. The staff and board are hard-working and dedicated. I like that."

"Jim has a lot of energy," said Hearth President and CEO Mark Hinderlie. "He's about action and so is Hearth. And his knowledge and experiences as a business owner are great assets. We're so pleased to have him on our Board of Visitors."

As for the elderly gentleman whose dilemma brought Jim and Hearth together, he's on board too - living in Hearth's Burroughs Street residence in Jamaica Plain.

"It's amazing how everything fell into place," remarked Jim. "I met this man who needed help. Gene knew who could help him, and brought us all together. My friend has a new home and so do I, in a manner of speaking. I'm really looking forward to working more with Hearth."
