Invaluable Volunteers: Hearth's 2008 Volunteer Appreciation Reception

Wednesday, April 30, 2008 • 25 Ruggles Street, Roxbury, MA

This year Hearth chose to celebrate the invaluable contributions of our volunteers during National Volunteer Week. It was standing room only during the evening's program which was held at Ruggles Assisted Living Community in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston. Community members, staff, residents, and volunteers gathered to recognize the outstanding efforts of nine individual and group volunteers and hear Joe Finn of MASHA talk of Hearth's role in the on-going battle to end homelessness in Massachusetts.

Hearth would like to thank the residents of Ruggles for kindly hosting the event and also thank Haley House Bakery and Cafe for the delicious food.

Special Recognition of Invaluable Volunteers

Of course we wish we could give everyone an award for the time they give to Hearth and our residents. Whether they just stop in to visit or take on the big job of landscaping at Bishop Street, every volunteer is an invaluable member of the Hearth community.

Mary started volunteering at Uphams Corner ElderHouse in Dorchester as part of her service learning requirement. She has kept visiting the residents weekly for over two years, leading a low-impact exercise class.

The City School began volunteering at Uphams Corner in 2002. As part of their education on homelessness, they simulate spending a night at the shelter. The next morning they visit Uphams Corner, cook the residents breakfast, and then organize a game of bingo.
Gale Druga and Mark Hinderlie of Hearth with honoree Donna Kent

Donna's endless energy and resourcefulness make her invaluable to Hearth. She acts as liaison between Hearth and church and can always find the in-kind donations residents and clients need.
Site Director Bob Jordan with honorees Dottie and Freda

Dottie and Freda not only volunteer at the Bishop Street House and other Hearth residences, they also live at Bishop Street. Their energy and positive attitudes are truly priceless.

Curtis and Ron of Hearth's Anna Bissonnette House
Curtis and Ron both play important roles at their home, the Anna Bissonnnette House. Curtis always pitches in to help set up in-house events like birthday parties and barbeques, makes coffee every morning for his fellow residents, and maintains the aquarium in the Shapiro Room. Ron quietly keeps Anna Bissonnette House immaculate, cleaning up after events without anyone even seeing him do it.
