Legislators Lead Effort for Donation Drive for Homeless Elders
November 06, 2006
Massachusetts legislators are partnering with Hearth to end homelessness among the elderly in the Commonwealth, following the signing of the bill to end homelessness in Massachusetts. Putting words into action, the House and Senate offices are collecting furnishing for Hearth's newest residence for low-income seniors. The site, located at 27 Burroughs Street in, is a Victorian home on a quiet lane in the heart of Jamaica Plain. This is Hearth's sixth residence in the Boston area and will become the permanent home of 14 frail elders starting in December, raising Hearth's number of permanent housing units to over 135.
Senator Cynthia Creem, Representative Jeffrey Sanchez, Assistant Majority Leader Byron Rushing, and Representative Marie St. Fleur have already offered their offices as depository sites for the needed new items. The gifts will be presented to Hearth at their Annual Meeting on Wednesday, November 15th in the Great Hall at the State House from 9 - 11 am.
Anyone interested in making a donation for the new home should contact Jennifer Hibbard at 617-369-1565.
