SOMERVILLE - Artist Peter Phelps, 82, was living in a shelter just two years ago. Now, thanks to Hearth, a non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of homelessness among the elderly, Phelps has his own apartment in which to create his masterpieces, and 64 of his works are on exhibit at the Diesel Cafe in a one-man show. Phelps's inspiring story was featured on the CBS Sunday Morning Show in November 2008.
The Diesel Cafe is hosting the show, with proceeds to benefit Hearth. In addition to hosting Hearth's art show, the Diesel Cafe donates to a different local non-profit each quarter, through a program started by owner Tucker Lewis and co-owner Jennifer Park a year and a half ago. Phelps currently gives all of his artwork to Hearth to raise money for the organization. "Very simply, I believe in giving back," Phelps said. "Hearth has been a great help to me."
