Hearth - Ending Elder Homelessness

Peter Phelps and Hearth at JP Open Studios

82-year-old artist continues to paint in support of program working to end elder homelessness.

Artist Peter PhelpsPeter Phelps latest art show, hosted by Hearth as part of the 2009 Jamaica Plain Open Studios was a great success! Nearly 60 original paintings were sold to benefit Hearth, raising over $2000. Hearth also made new friends, meeting people from all over Jamaica Plain. Peter and Hearth's staff would like to thank the residents of 27 Burroughs Street for allowing us to take over their front porch as well as the volunteers who helped make the event such a success.

The Artwork

Peter's paintings can be viewed online, and the remaining paintings are available for sale. Email Jennifer Hartwell or call her at 617-369-1565.

Phelps's work is eclectic, from whimsical flowers to geometric abstracts and colorful portraits. Phelps is a self-described "scrounger," and his works are inspired by whatever materials at hand: frames, paper (from traditional stretched canvases to sheets of paper towel), paint colors, brushes, and stamps. He also experiments with collage, crayon, and even sequins. The frames and mats are important to Phelps; he likes his paintings ready-to-hang when he gives them to neighbors and friends as gifts. He uses the frame as inspiration for the painting it will hold.

Phelps and his art have been the subject of many news stories, on CBS News Sunday Morning and WBUR, as well as in The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald. Most recently he was interviewed by Voice of America as part of a story on Hearth.
