Uphams Corner ElderHouse
614 Columbia Road, Dorchester, MA 02125 | 617-265-6376
Opened in March 2002, the fourteen apartments known as ElderHouse provide fully furnished studio apartments for formerly homeless men and women, some with special needs. ElderHouse is the second collaboration among New Communities Services, Inc., New Atlantic Development Corporation, and Hearth; it is part of a mixed-use development known as Uphams Corner Market, comprised of retail and residential units.
The site is an important part in the historic fabric of Dorchester and is listed in the National Historic Registry. At its zenith in the early 1900s, the Uphams Corner Market encompassed over 50,000 square feet of retail space in multiple buildings. In a sense, it was the world's first supermarket - as well as the first store in Boston to have its own parking lot.
