Hearth - Ending Elder Homelessness

Current Volunteer Needs

From time to time, Hearth staff ask for volunteers to help with specific projects. These opportunities are listed below. For on-going volunteer activities, visit our Volunteer Opportunities Page.

Accompany Elders to Appointments

Escort Hearth's residents to their medical appointments.
Many of the 40 residents at Hearth's Ruggles Affordable Assisted Living Community would benefit from the help of volunteers who accompany the elders to their appointments (usually medical) around Boston.

Some are shy about going out in public alone, others have poor vision or very hard of hearing which can make taking taxis or public transportation alone very difficult. Navigating through Boston alone can also be confusing for some.

Hearth is looking for a individuals who would be able to accompany one of our senior citizens to his/her appointment - generally with at least one week's notice.

Requirements:
  • Individuals must pass a CORI check and complete the volunteer orientation
  • Enjoy working with the elderly and disabled
  • Experience working with the elderly or disabled is a plus but not required
  • Be available during week day business hours
  • Patience and flexibility
Ruggles Affordable Assisted Living is located in Roxbury, just a short walk from the Melnea Cass stop on the Washington Street Silver Line. Free, off-street parking is also available.
